MENINO BENJAMIM
The first black clown in Brazil, Benjamim de Oliveira was one of the creators of circus-theater in the country. A great artist, he took the initial steps to modernize the craft of performing arts. Forgotten by Brazilians, his memory began to be revived in the 1990s.
On June 11, 2020, the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great black clown was celebrated. Before that, the Salgueiro samba school honored him at the Rio de Janeiro carnival.
As a black author, Otávio Jr.'s intention is to show and reveal his great legacy for the Brazilian circus to young readers in a playful text with a “circus” tone.
There is no intention of writing biographies or profiles: the purpose is to encourage research into the life and work of the “character”, offering “books of discoveries” that leave gaps for the reader seeks more information after reading.
