Originally published in Japan in 1985, Kiki's Delivery Service (Majo no Takkyūbin) by Eiko Kadono has become a beloved classic of children's literature. In 1989, it was adapted into the acclaimed animated film Kiki's Delivery Service, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. The story's enduring popularity inspired five additional novels, completing a six-book series, with the final volume published in 2009.
The story follows Kiki, a spirited young witch who never backs down from a challenge. When she turns thirteen, it's time to follow an age-old tradition: spend a year living independently in a new town. Full of confidence, Kiki flies to the seaside city of Koriko, certain that her magical abilities will quickly earn her a place in the community. But winning the trust of the townspeople proves more difficult than she imagined.
With her loyal and witty black cat, Jiji, by her side, Kiki gradually builds new friendships, gains confidence, and discovers that true magic can often be found in the simplest moments of everyday life.

Kadono was inspired to create Kiki after her thirteen-year-old daughter drew a picture of a young witch surrounded by floating musical notes—a simple sketch that gave life to one of Japan's most beloved literary heroines.
