From 1920 to 1943, acclaimed fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien took on the role of Santa Claus and wrote personalized letters to his children at Christmas time. In addition to dedicating himself to the content of the letters, the father-author took pains to create beautiful drawings and a special letter for each of the main characters: Santa Claus, his clumsy helper Northern Polar Bear and, later, the elf-secretary Ilbereth. To give more emotion to his stories, the spontaneous Polar Bear and the responsible Santa Claus interact with different characters, giving an even more dynamic tone to the stories. There were Paksu and Valkotukka, the nephews of the Polar Bear, the Snowman and many others, such as the unusual Aura Bora Real (Aurora Borealis) or Ursa Major, which, in addition to being a constellation, was a cousin of the Northern Polar Bear. In these more than twenty years of contact between Tolkien's Santa Claus and his children, you follow the historical changes experienced by England at the time, such as the general strike and the Second World War. Furthermore, it is possible to perceive the author's development over the decades, as Tolkien lets touches of his narrative, poetic, linguistic, calligraphic and illustrative discoveries spill into his letters year after year. It is certainly a great Christmas gift for Tolkien fans or not, of all ages. Book recommended for children aged 9 to 12 or 6 to 8 in the case of shared reading.
