Women can be heroines too. When young nursing student Frances McGrath hears these words, her life takes on a new perspective.
Raised on the idyllic Coronado Island and overprotected by conservative parents, she has always taken pride in doing the right thing and being a good girl. But the year is 1966, and the world is changing. Suddenly, Frankie begins to imagine a different future for herself.
When her brother goes to serve in Vietnam, she acts on impulse and decides to join the Army Nurse Corps. As inexperienced as the soldiers, Frankie soon feels overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction but finds support among other nurses.
Upon returning home, she will face new traumas in a politically divided country that fails to give proper recognition to the services rendered in Vietnam.
Although focusing on the life of a single woman who went to war, The Heroines honors the stories of all those who put themselves in danger to help others, whose sacrifice and commitment were forgotten by their own country.
